Photovoltaic panels

 
 

Photovoltaic energy occurs when sunlight is converted into electricity using solar cells with semiconductors. These semiconductor cells are typically made of silicon and they don’t contain corrosive materials or moving parts.As long as the solar cells are exposed to the light, they will produce electricity with minimal maintenance.

The term "photovoltaic"is composed of the Greek word "photo" which means light and the word "voltaic", a reference to electricity, related to the name of the inventor Alessandro Volta (the inventor of the cell, the first battery)In 1839, the French physicist, Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect which consists in producing electricity in a solid or liquid form, under the influence of sunlight.This discovery prompted many experiments with ligt sources and semiconductors which led to the invention of solar cellsthat produce photovoltaic energy.

 

Photovoltaic cells are manufactured in various shapes and sizes. The materials currently used for photovoltaic cells include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, cadmium-tellurium, copper, indium, gallium, cadmium selenide /sulphide. Due to the increasing demand for renewable energy sources, the production of solar cells and photovoltaic networks , has advanced considerably in recent years. More cells are connected together to form solar panels or modules. These modules can then be connected to create photovoltaicarrays, components of photovoltaic system with different powers.The resulting power of photovoltaic energy depends on the size of the array. The size can vary depending on the amount of available sunlighjt and the amount of required energy.

 

The photovoltaic energy is emerging as a viable solution regarding the energy problems around the world. We still have a long way to go until the photovoltaic energy  will become the main source of energy in the world.The technology used in photovoltaic (PV) systems is well developed and there are improvements and changes that occur regularly, in particular in the production processes. The systems are quite reliable, and they have been well tested in various applications. The ongoing research in photovoltaic energy bring promises and hope for the future. By the end of 2011, there were installed a total of 67,4 GW, enough to generate 85 TWh / year, and by the end of 2012, 100 GW installed power, global. The solar photovoltaic energy is now, after hydro and wind power, the third most important source of renewable, globally installed.

More than 100 countries use photovoltaic energy.The installations can be fitted on the ground (and sometimes integrated with agriculture and grazing) or built into the roof or walls of a building. The main obstacle regarding the increased use of photovoltaic systems is their high initial cost. Price reductions continues with a constant rate. In some off-grid locations, at a distance shorter then 0, 5 km, photovoltaic systems can be effective versus maintenance costs of the power line in the add property and other taxes.
